In the Community
While we love to welcome visitors to the Little Red Reading House, we also enjoy connecting with children and families across the community.
It Takes a Village to Raise a Reader
“If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.”
–Antoinede Saint-Exupery
Book Bank
The Book Bank collects donations from generous community members all year long, and distributes them to children across the community. It provides books to the Little Red Reading House as well as several organizations across Calgary that serve young readers.
Little Red Reading Van
Helping children become joyful, confident readers is a journey supported by many caring adults and community partners. To ensure children and families continue to have access to books and resources, our Little Red Reading Van travels from our Book Bank to the beautiful shelves of our Reading Place Affiliates.
Strong partnerships are at the heart of what we do. As part of the Owerko Centre at the University of Calgary, the Little Red Reading House is part of a thriving ecosystem of research, education, innovation and community engagement. We help connect ongoing research happening at UCalgary directly with families in the community.
The Little Red Reading House is a part of the Kids Literacy Collective, a network of educators, community leaders, program providers, and literacy changemakers working together to ensure children can read by Grade 3 – and that reading becomes a joyful part of kids’ lives.
The commitment of donors and champions allows the Little Red Reading House to be a thriving part of the community. We are incredibly grateful to be supported by generous donors through the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation.
