Community Stories

At the heart of the Little Red Reading House are the stories we share together. This space highlights voices from our community – families, schools and partners – and the moments that make reading so meaningful.

Owen’s Story

Last year, eight-year-old Owen suffered a spinal cord stroke and has since been in rehabilitation. Inspired by the care he received, he decided to collect books to give to the Alberta Children’s Hospital. He turned to his hockey teammates and together they collected so many books, the hospital couldn’t accept them all. Owen learned about the Book Bank and was saddened by the number of children who don’t have books in their homes. He donated the remaining 750 children’s books to the Book Bank so that other kids can discover their own love of reading. Thank you so much Owen!

Books on Buses

Our Book Bank partners with the Calgary Board of Education for the Books on Buses program, allowing students across the community to access books and enjoy reading moments on their way to and from school.

“The Books on Buses program has been working really well for our students. Our driver often reads to the children while they’re stopped and waiting for dismissal from the bus, which the students really enjoy. Overall, the program has helped create a calm, positive atmosphere and supports our literacy goals in a meaningful way.We really appreciate the support from Transportation Services and are grateful for this initiative.”
