Build a Reading Place
A great reading place can inspire and nurture a love of reading. It is a space where a child feels safe and comfortable enough to immerse themselves in a story.
Studies have shown that both the acts of reading and being read to at home contributes to positive behaviours in children. When children read regularly at home, they gain appreciation for books and learn that reading is a valuable and fun activity.
We’ve created a Reading Place Playbook that can get kids started on creating their own reading place.
“Adults admire their environment. They remember and think about it, but the child absorbs it. The thing the child sees are not just remembered. They form part of the child’s soul.”
-Dr. Maria Montessori
When creating your own reading place, there are four important things to consider: this is a good place for reading books, it’s a place that encourages curiosity, it’s cozy and it’s a place that helps build connection.
The Little Red Reading House has many fun spaces that are designed to encourage reading. You will find lots of art, illustrations, reading nooks, different sized seating and themed rooms throughout the house. We encourage you to visit us and find ideas that you can use in your own space.
Reading places aren’t just for at home, they can be created anywhere from community hubs to businesses to schools. We’ve created some resources to create a reading place just about anywhere.
